Retail Mistakes | Retail Start | Retail Examples

This site is dedicated to operating a retail business and the mistakes to avoid.

Here is a list of retail mistakes to avoid:

When advertising be sure that your target audience has been clearly defined. Select the proper media to reach your defined target market. The most common forms are TV, Radio, Newspaper, Magazines and direct mail..

The amount of advertising you should do is dependent on the size of the niche you are servicing.

Make sure you have the proper bookkeping skills. If you don't hire a firm that does. Demand reporting on a weekly basis.

Pay your state sales taxes on a regular basis.

Protect your credit. Credit problems can be the worst thing that can happen to a business. Even if you are incorporated the bad business credit can affect you personally.

Do not use credit cards to operate your business. This probably seems like business 101. Many times people feel like they are one month away from being successful and so they borrow on credit cards. Next thing they know they are out of business and have no way to repay the credit cards.

Do not acquire office equipment that you can live without. IE. Expensive computers, top of the line stereo equipment.

Be very careful in selecting the correct type of business to form.

Pay your employees fairly. But don't overpay them.

Timing is critical in business.

Be careful about seasonal business.

If possible gain as much industry experience as you can.

Price your products appropriately. Don't overcharge.

Pick your support team very carefully. IE. Banker, Lawyer, Accountant.

Choose your location wisely.

Don't lease a suite that is too large for your business needs.
